In an innovative twist for exhibitions, the Timken Museum of Art is charting a new course by collaborating with the San Diego Symphony to bring art and music together to give visitors a vibrant sensory experience. The San Diego Symphony’s Nuvi Mehta has created a soundscape to accompany the compelling exhibition, Witness to War: Callot, Goya, Bellows, which runs through May 28, 2017.

While viewing the exhibition of more than 100 prints, etchings, and lithographs by artists Jacques Callot, Francisco Goya, and George Bellows, depicting searing images from the 17th to the 20th centuries of the Thirty Years War and World War I, selected excerpts from three poignant, classical works—Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 and Symphony No. 11 and Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 6—provide a rich backdrop to the violence of war. By combining art and music, the Timken hopes to give visitors an enriched artistic experience.

Visitors will also be treated to video played in the museum featuring San Diego Symphony commentator Nuvi Mehta explaining the meaning of the music and how it correlates with this moving and emotional collection of art.

“Adding musical moments that precede or follow battles depicted in this dramatic collection of more than 100 works of art is a new feature within the gallery and enhances the introspection and chance for discovery we are seeking with this exhibition,” said Megan Pogue, Executive Director of the Timken Museum.

Special Event April 13: Nuvi Mehta will offer attendees a fascinating and in-depth discussion about the music of Shostakovich and Mahler, its meaning, motivation, and inspiration allowing the museum visitor to engage with the Witness to War on a deeper level.

Widely considered one of the finest speakers on classical music, Mehta has a gift for capturing minds and hearts. The Los Angeles Times likens him to a young Gary Cooper, saying, “His old-fashioned Hollywood charisma extends to an eloquent and theatrical way of speaking that is almost entirely lost today.” With a vast amount of musical experience, Mehta’s conducting appearances have taken him around the world. He is a graduate of The Juilliard School and Indiana University.
