Below is our interview with the co-authors of “Everything I Know about Dating, I Learned Through Surfing.”

Nancy Spooner Bsharah and Tara Brouwer produced a beautiful coffee-table style book of quotes and comical dating stories in an elegantly bound art-style book.

Hera Hub: How did you come up with the idea?

Nancy: I had just gone through a divorce.  A friend invited me on an all-girls surf trip where I learned to surf.  The more I went surfing men would give me tips on how to catch a wave.  I started thinking, “This sounds like dating advice.” One day I was talking to Tara and I told her about this book idea and girlfriend went crazy.

Tara:  I was actually looking for a personal design project.  I have had a lot of personal dating stories as well as I’m a graphic designer and illustrator.  So it all clicked.

Hera Hub:  I’m so excited to see you have a kickstarter campaign?

Nancy: Yes. Kickstarter is for the arts.  What you do, you put your need and your want up on Kickstarter and you give rewards to anybody who backs you.

Hera Hub: That’s awesome.  I also heard about a strategic alliance with SurfAid?

Nancy: We are very happy to have partnered with SurfAid.  It’s a non-profit humanitarian organization that focuses on islands in Indonesia that don’t have running water or electricity but it’s a great place to surf.  And so they do tsunami relief and malaria education.  They help get fresh water. So part of our proceeds from the book are going to give back for SurfAid.

Hera Hub: That sounds great. Well, thanks so much for your time ladies.
