Local Restaurant Gives Back to Italian Earthquake Victims

Carmel Valley San Diego Community | Ashley Weaver | Pasta all'AmatricianaLittle Italy restaurant Civico 1845 (pronounced CHEE-vee-ko), owned and operated by Italian born-and-raised brothers Dario and Pietro Gallo, are helping the victims of the devastating Italian earthquake by paying tribute to Amatrice, Italy – the small mountainous city at the epicenter of the initial quake on Wednesday morning – and its famous pasta dish “Pasta all’Amatriciana.”

Through Sunday, September 11, the restaurant will offer its own version of Pasta all’Amatriciana, a spaghetti dish with tomato sauce, Guanciale (an Italian cured meat prepared from pork cheek) and Pecorino Romano cheese, with all proceeds from the dish donated to the disaster relief efforts in Italy – specifically, to the Protezione Civile, the Italian department of civil protection for the Italian earthquake victims. The dish will be offered for both lunch and dinner at $16.

“Amatrice is one of the most beautiful towns in Italy, and we were all so sad to hear about the devastation that resulted from this earthquake,” said owner and general manager Dario Gallo. “We felt that we needed to do something to help with the situation, and we decided to make this famous dish as our way of giving back and helping the families affected by this disaster. We hope to raise as much as we can.”

Civico 1845 recently celebrated its first anniversary at 1845 India Street in the heart of San Diego’s Little Italy. Impressing customers with its traditional, yet modern dishes, the restaurant has quickly gained favor among locally based Italians as one of the few San Diegan restaurants with truly authentic Italian cuisine.

In addition to the popularity of its regular menu, Civico 1845’s full vegan menu has become highly regarded in the last year, with both OpenTable and TripAdvisor naming Civico 1845 one of the top 50 vegan friendly restaurants in the U.S. in 2015, and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals’ (PETA) recognition as a must-try San Diego restaurant in its list of Top 10 Vegan-Friendly Cities of 2016.
