New Exhibition at the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum Sheds Light on an Often Overlooked Piece of American History:
THE CHINESE AND THE IRON ROAD
The San Diego Chinese Historical Museum (SDCHM) is proud to present, The Chinese and the Iron Road: Building the Transcontinental, a historical overview of the Chinese railroad workers who were instrumental in building the United States’ first Transcontinental Railroad, on loan from the Chinese Historical Society of America. The exhibition features historical and contemporary photos, illustrations, personal stories from descendants, and bilingual Chinese/English text written by the Chinese Railroad Workers in North America Project at Stanford University. In order to bring the exhibition to life, SDCHM will also display period artifacts and train memorabilia from the San Diego Model Railroad Museum and the Museum’s own collection. This is the first time SDCHM and the San Diego Model Railroad Museum have collaborated, and as a special feature these two museums will also offer special discounted admission to audiences who visit both museums during the month of March.
To coincide with the Chinese and the Iron Road Exhibition, Dr. Russell Low, the descendent of a Chinese railroad worker and San Diego native, will give a special presentation: The Work of Giants—The Chinese and the Transcontinental Railroad: A Descendant’s Story on Saturday, March 5th from 2PM-4PM at the Chuang Archive and Learning Center. Dr. Russell Low will present an interactive lecture of the stories his family discovered by his great grandfather, Hung Lai Woh who worked on the first transcontinental railroad in the United States over a century ago. Including a display of photographs and heirlooms that have been passed down from his family, Dr. Low’s lecture will give a personal look at this often overlooked piece of American history.
The San Diego Chinese Historical Museum (SDCHM) advances a deeper understanding of China and Chinese America through programs in education, culture, and art in the belief that cross-cultural understanding strengthens our San Diego community. Located in the heart of San Diego’s downtown Asia Pacific Historic District, SDCHM is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary this year with special events, exhibitions, and programs. Over the past twenty years, SDCHM has welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors, collected thousands of ethnographic artifacts, and hosted hundreds of educational programs and exhibitions. Today, SDCHM remains a platform for celebrating multiculturalism, enriching the community, and showcasing San Diego as an international cultural tourist destination.
