Just in case you’re wondering…an octopus has six arms and two legs. As a Carmel Valley San Diego community member, this is just one cool little factoid you can discover at the local Sea Life Aquarium in Carlsbad, at the Legoland California Resort. On April 14th, 2011, I had the honor of attending a pre-launch party for the new interactive exhibit called “Octopus Gardens.” This gave me an inside look into the new attraction as well as meet a few of the team members responsible for making it all possible. What impacted me most while visiting the Sealife Aquarium is that it is a part of a larger movement towards ocean and water conservancy. Some of the Conservancy Success stories include: breeding, seal rescues, re-homing, and other conservancy campaigns that take place across the globe.
For those of us that live in Carmel Valley San Diego community and are looking to join in on this movement immediately, there are a lot of opportunities to get involved. Sealife has dedicated the entire month of April to Earth Day and the efforts to keep the Earth beautiful. They have put together many family activities to unify the community in one joint effort to keep our local waters clean and safe. One specific event that might be of interest, is the “Creek to Bay Clean Up,” which is taking place on April 30, 2011. If you watched my full-length interview with Crystal from Sealife, you probably already know what type of cool free stuff is available to those who participate in clean up. I’ll give you a hint, it includes a free t-shirt and tickets to the aquarium! Maybe I gave it away, but I think the real gift comes from participating on the day of the clean up and contributing to the movement. Other events and activities include: Beach Fest June 4, 2011 and Coastal Clean Up on September 17, 2011.
