On January 23rd the Torrey Hills Center of Carmel Valley hosted Packet Pick Up Day. This event was an opportunity for anyone who was participating in the Carmel Valley 5k & Fun Run, to drop off their final information and get their number for the race. There was a silent auction and a great live band (“Luneaux“)playing throughout the evening. This year, Kaiser Permanente was the title sponsor for the Carmel Valley 5K – the purpose of race is to raise funds for The Del Mar Schools Education Foundation. The foundation was formed with the sole purpose of raising the money needed to secure children’s future at all the communities schools. Any donations given to The Del Mar Schools Education Foundation helps kids every day, with programs that make the difference between a basic education and a truly great one.
The Mission of the Del Mar Schools Education Foundation is to provide resources to support and enhance educational programs and opportunities for the students in the Del Mar Union School District.
The Vision of the Del Mar School Education Foundation is that every student attending elementary school in the Del Mar Union School District will have opportunity to receive a premier education.
The 5K course begins at Carmel Del Mar Elementary School and heads south on Carmel Creek Road to the bike trail, heading east parallel to HWY 56. From there the course will take you out and back along a beautiful tree lined path with a mix of paved and trail running, splashed with rolling hills. Runners will return to Carmel Creek Road, then head back to the finish line at Carmel Del Mar Elementary School. The Fun Run is a non-competitive one-mile course on Carmel Del Mar Elementary School grounds. This a great way to involve the children in a healthy lifestyle and benefit the DMSEF at the same time. Strollers are welcome along with Mom and Dad.

Name: Santiago Benito
School: Canyon Crest Academy
Dream: Santiago hopes to one day become a documentary film director and producer. He also hopes to write and make Hollywood films.
Interests: He enjoys reading almost as much as he enjoys writing; my favorite book is The Life of Pi by Yann Martel. Santiago have had an interest in the art of cinema ever since he could remember. From an early age, Santiago has been mesmerized by the beauty of the lines said and the actors on the big screen. While many kids have a hard time trying to figure out what they want to do after they get out of school, Santiago knew right off the bat that he wanted to be involved in the world of cinema somehow. Aside from that, he enjoys playing basketball and spending time with family and friends. In addition, Santiago is very interested in being involved in things much larger than himself. For example, he is a part of many non-profit organizations whose goals are to help people and communities all over the world (i.e. Japan, Africa, and the Untied States).
Journey: He was born in San Diego on August 14, 1998 and has had a wonderful life growing up in the Carmel Valley area.
