Feng Shui 101 – Name Names that are Using Feng Shui

This was one of my segments during my last speaking engagement in Minneapolis:

In a study for the Price Waterhouse Appraisal Department, Orell Christian Anderson found that approximately 70% of Asian purchasers in Southern California considered Feng Shui during the purchase of property.

So, what is Feng Shui, and what is so special about it that causes thousands of individuals and businesses to apply Feng Shui?

Prime Minister of England Tony Blair, Prince Charles of England, Real Estate mogul billionaire Donald Trump, Multimillionaire talk show host Oprah, the great Madonna and so on have been known to practice Feng Shui for their homes or their business.  So using Feng Shui to enhance your business and your personal life must work wonders, yes?

Feng Shui 101 ~

Contrary to what most people think: Feng Shui did not start in China. It started in India over 6,000 years ago. At that time, only the privileged could afford to practice Feng Shui. Just as Buddhism originated in India and then became popular in China, Feng Shui was also adopted by China. The first Feng Shui Master in China was known as Master Sang of the Tang Dynasty (618-906). He is known for his theories on dragon veins, a vital contribution to modern Feng Shui; mountains & valleys, landscape Feng Shui, and so forth. The idea was to help farmers know when to plant, and when to harvest the crops by using Landscape Feng Shui.

Thereafter, Feng Shui was embraced by China Emperors and Empresses to maintain power.

When the Communist took over China, Feng Shui was outlawed. However, Chairman Mao Zedong secretly practiced Feng Shui to maintain power. Chairman Mao Zedong ordered ‘a King size bed’ for himself (which have been used by emperors for centuries) to ensure that he slept as a King, and therefore lived as King. He ordered the killing of all Feng Shui Masters for fear they would practice Feng Shui and use Feng Shui to overthrow his power. By the end of the Cultural Revolution, Feng Shui became accessible again throughout China and began to appear in the West as early as the 1970’s.

Now let’s talk about Feng Shui and Real Estate. In Real Estate, when you are looking for a property, it is always Location! Location! Location! In Real Estate, you can change your home but you can’t change your environment.

In Feng Shui, the concept is the same as Real Estate. It is still Location! Location! Location! The structural interior can always be changed, and can always be modified to be “right Feng Shui”, but the exterior lot size, and the surrounding area may have limitations or restrictions to changes. That is the reason prudent real estate investors always invest in advice from a Feng Shui Master prior to Real Estate hunting.

Does Feng Shui work? Well, if you look at Hong Kong, it is such a tiny Island with no natural resources. So why is Hong Kong the world’s most influential financial center? In Hong Kong, it is unheard of not to consult a Feng Shui master prior to entering any Real Estate deals. You may skip the Real Estate Agent but to skip the Feng Shui Master, that is a ‘no no.’ Without a Feng Shui Master’s blessing, it means disaster, and it spells trouble. Feng Shui Masters can charge hundreds of thousands of dollars for their consultation, but the clients still feel indebted and still treat the Feng Shui Masters with a great respect and never quarrel about the Feng Shui fees. Feng Shui Masters are held on retainer by having the clients pay a retaining fee just for ongoing services (consultation, and rearranging things, etc.). After all, there is only one thing that is guaranteed in life: Change! The world changes constantly, the earth moves constantly, so your environment must move with the earth in its best direction to benefit wealth, and health, etc.

“Feng Shui is another element in which you can have the advantage over your competitors. Asians are becoming a big part of our market and this is something we cannot ignore,” said Trump in an interview with New York Times on September 22, 1994.

Donald Trump is a household name and he is well known for his savvy business deals. He uses Feng Shui for his Trump business. As Trump stated: “I do not have to believe in Feng Shui. I do it because it makes me money.” Come to think of it, the majority of buyers for Trump projects are Asians from Hong Kong and Canada loaded with cash but refuse to buy anything without a Feng Shui Master’s blessing. It’s no wonder why Trump embraces Feng Shui.
