It is pretty safe to say that every parent’s worst nightmare is realizing our child is sick and you can’t make it better with a kiss from Mom or Dad. Friends of our community have recently experience this with their beautiful 5 year old son Micah, who was recently diagnosed with Leukemia.
What you are about to read is a portion of Micah’s story told by his loving mom:
Since his VBAC birth into the arms of UCLA Medical Center midwives, Micah has been a happy & healthy 5 year old boy. We have been a green family for 8 years, growing food, feeding & breathing as organic as it’ll come in Los Angeles! To our surprise on September 15, 2011 Micah was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). He was hospitalized for 3 weeks and endured countless procedures and treatments. Micah has been extraordinarily calm, brave and responsive to holistic ways of coping with pain, discomfort, fear and stress.
ALL is treatable and has an 85% cure rate. Micah has weekly chemo at the Cedars Sinai Medical Center Cancer Clinic until June 2012, then monthly until 2014. He was hospitalized again, over Halloween weekend, for a fever and low red blood cell count. We anticipate that he will be hospitalized again and again, as much as is needed to keep him well during cancer treatment.
Don, Micah’s dad, is working hard to keep our health insurance and keep up with the numerous and continuous medical bills. I’m working hard, loving, supporting and caring for Micah and his 2 sisters. We are so grateful to the Steele Families and dear San Diego friends and community for organizing and supporting this fundraiser with love and generosity.
Warmly,
Diem-Mi Burton, proud mama of Micah
There is a fundraiser Wednesday evening at La Paloma in Encinitas to assist the family in raising some funds to help support them during this difficult time. Local film maker Taylor Steele has offered to have a world premiere of his latest surf film at his traditional spot for movie premiers…good ole’ La Paloma. Please join us this Wednesday at 6pm or 8:30pm for the world premiere of Innersection 2012. Doors will open at 5pm, The Silent Auction will go on through the evening, with two raffles during the night, one for each show. We will also have a live acoustic performance by Trent Hancock before each show.
We have created a facebook page to help spread the word. We encourage you to send this information to anyone that you feel would like to help a family that needs our support, as well as check out Poor Specimens latest production. Tickets are $10. We have a “Buy Tickets” button on the facebook page below the profile picture. We will have a Raffle as well as a silent auction, if you have items you would like to donate please let us know. We were asked by a few family’s how they can donate to the family, so we have also added a “Donate Now” link on the Coastal Family Living website that will take you to their paypal donation page. Thank you so much!!! The Steele Families, along with friends of the Burton Family
Our family created and distributed The Beach Break News, a local news magazine showcasing the coastal communities in north county san diego. We felt a website would be a fun way to continue spreading the word on what’s happening around our town and so Coastal Family Living was created. We share thoughts on local restaurants, events, favorite boutiques, raising children, and all things that inspire us like the many local families that have a great story that should be shared. We also love photography and love to share moments captured through a lens, whether it’s from our lens or yours. We are a family of five and we love our life!
