Nothing ushers in Spring better than the start of the Little League season and this past weekend Sage Canyon School in Carmel Valley San Diego hosted the Opening Day festivities in spectacular fashion. On an 80 degree day that felt more like Summer than Spring about 1,000 Del Mar Little League kids and their parents came out to kick off the new season.
Several booths were set up with photographers corralling kids for their team photos with proud parents and family members looking on. On the field next door a local band entertained while food vendors and bounce houses rounded out the festivities. As a charitable organization Del Mar Little League relies on the support of local businesses and individuals, so filling the outfield on Sunday were several of this year’s sponsors offering giveways, demonstrations and more. What makes Carmel Valley such a close knit community is the involvement of its local businesses, whose owners and employees are often the parents or family members of this year’s crop of Little Leaguers. Over 75 local business sponsors and generous families stepped up this year to help provide player uniforms, trophies, equipment and umpiring – all vital components of another successful year of Little League.
Little League in San Diego continues to be wildly popular and with a talented group of Del Mar and Carmel Valley kids there’s always the possibility of a magical run toward the World Series like the Chula Vista team accomplished with their championship in 2009.
