Local Carmel Valley schools are participating in The Butterfly Project and creating ceramic butterflies to memorialize the children that died in the Holocaust for a beautiful fountain at Torrey Hills shopping Center (designed by Helen Segal).
The Butterfly Project ( founded in 2006 by educator Jan Landau and artist Cheryl Rattner Price) is excited to announce that it will be partnering with Torrey Hills Shopping Center which has provided 2000 butterflies to bring this transformational art program to local San Diego schools. Every ceramic butterfly painted represents one of the 1.5 million children killed in the Holocaust.
The Butterfly Project’s mission is to engage students of all faiths to paint butterflies and enhance their lessons on the Holocaust.
Local participants join a worldwide community of over 120,000 butterflies are displayed worldwide reminding us of the importance of such values as respect for others and taking a stand against injustices. Although painting in the name of a child murdered more than 70 years ago, the students are reminded that everyday somewhere in the world, kids their own age today are still dying solely because of their ethnicity or religion. Getting involved with this project addresses the urgent need that we all become advocates for a safer world.
Visitors will get to reflect on the power of this diverse community as it comes together embedding butterflies on the fountain at Torrey Hills Shopping Center. There will be on site events in the early spring to allow community members to paint butterflies and learn more about the project.
The following schools are confirmed to participate, with 5 additional schools pending approval:
