Many of us know the importance of daily flossing. It decreases dental cavities between our teeth and fights periodontal disease for our gums. Many of us leave a routine dental hygiene appointment and after the hygienists motivates us we start flossing, we floss for a few days or weeks consistently. But then all of a sudden we get a phone call from our dental office that we have a dental cleaning tomorrow and panic sets in. We floss frantically trying to remove months of neglect but to no avail. The hygienists looks at our gums and shakes her head and the guilt from failure hits again.
If this sounds like the routine you are stuck in, you must read on.
We have all heard the myth that it takes 21 days to form a habit. The reality is that it takes longer. We all have our hygiene routines that we do without thinking of them. In fact we would be disgusted if we were to skip them. For example a morning shower with soap, deodorant, brushing our hair, if we still have some, and brushing our teeth. Try going a day without brushing you teeth. After lunch it would feel so “fuzzy” that you would feel dirty in your mouth. Now since we know that brushing your teeth only cleans 80% of your mouth, won’t it be awful to only soap 80% of your body or brush 80% of your hair.
Therefore it makes sense that if we want to have a healthy mouth, we have to clean it all. So how can we make flossing a habit?
