The Asian Pacific Historic District in San Diego will now have an official landmark. Founding Executive Director of the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum (SDCHM), Dr. Alexander Chuang (莊紹文) and Mrs. Agnes Chuang (李衛年) have given a pair of large stone lions to the City of San Diego as gift.
The unveiling of the Asian Pacific District Stone Lions will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at 10:30 am in front of SDCHM and the Sun-Yat Sen Memorial Extension Building. The celebration will include a special performance by the San Diego Lucky Lion Dancers and a reception with an array of hors d’oeuvres.
Alexander Chuang states, “For hundreds of years, the Chinese have placed sculptured lions at the gates of temples and official buildings as guardians to ward off evil spirits and demons. The stone lions are made of granite from Mount Tai, which is considered the holiest mountain in China.”
Special thanks goes to San Diego County Supervisor Ron Roberts, for his efforts to help fund the installation of the stone lions and to Joseph Wong for his contributions in architectural guidance.
SDCHM’s mission is to create a deeper understanding of China and Chinese America through programs in education, culture and art in the belief that cross-cultural understanding strengthens our diverse San Diego community. Located in the heart of San Diego’s downtown Asian Pacific Historic District, SDCHM is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary this year with special events, exhibitions, and programs. Over the past twenty years, SDCHM has welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors, collected thousands of ethnographic artifacts, and hosted hundreds of educational programs and exhibitions. Today, SDCHM remains a platform for celebrating multiculturalism, enriching the community, and showcasing San Diego as an international cultural tourist destination.
