Top Workout Trends of 2016 – Technology is Taking Over Fitness!

Who has their New Years Resolution all figured out and planned? Well, if you don’t – better start planning! Technology is taking over, and it sure is taking over our 2016 workout trends! The number one fitness trend of 2016 is wearable devices!

Carmel Valley San Diego Community | Amy Mewborn | Wearable TechnologyWearable devices that give you feedback immediately make you push yourself and plan your workout around this. We manage better, if you will. Now – no one needs a survey to tell us that technology is taking over the fitness world… we definitely already knew this.

There are so many different ways to use your wearable device, I’ll give you three. Some of these things maybe you’ve never thought about before. Some of these things maybe you have wondered, but have not thought to use your fitness tracker for it!

  1. Your wearable device can actually nudge you to get up and move if you are not meeting your fitness goals! Nothing like having your own personal “trainer” telling you to get off the couch and start moving!
  2. Some fitness trackers can sense when you are slouching and will give you a little nudge to remind you that you are slouching! Slouching can cause back pains, and make you look slumpy. Sitting up straight avoids all of that! You avoid back problems, neck problems, you look like you’ve dropped 10 pounds and it helps you breathe better.
  3. Nutrition/Breaking Habits. There is a new wearable device called a Pavlok that provides you with an electrical shock when you do something that you have resolved not to do.  I have been using it to try to break my sugar habits – and it is AMAZING!

Wearable technology has overtaken activities like body weight training and high-intensity interval training to claim the number one spot in this year’s survey,” said Walter R. Thompson, Ph.D. “Wearable devices also provide immediate feedback that can make the wearer more aware of their level of activity and can motivate the user to achieve their fitness goals.”

Who doesn’t want immediate feedback?? We want to know how we are doing and how much it’s paying off.

Other than your Wearable Technology, here are the top ten workout trends for 2016:

  1. Wearable Technology. Now, we didn’t need to tell you that, and you didn’t need to be told that by a survey. We already knew this. Wearable devices like FitBit, Apple Watch, Garmin and so many more will continue to be a huge trend in 2016, just as they were in 2015.
  2. Body Weight Training. This uses minimal equipment. It allows you to get back to the basics of fitness and it is affordable. Push-ups, pull-ups, squats, and crunches. How convenient!
  3. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). HIIT is a short burst of energy and giving your workout your ALL, followed by a short period of rest and letting the body recover. These are 30 minutes or fewer workouts. For example: sprint intervals. Sprint intervals are very effective!
  4. Strength Training. Strength training remains a central workout for many, many clubs. This is essential.
  5. Educated and Experienced Fitness Professionals. This year we see a major increase in the importance of trainers being certified. Credentials and certifications are important and it is most definitely being emphasized!
  6. Personal Training. Every year, more students are majoring in kinesiology, which can only mean that they are setting themselves up to work in health and fitness fields!
  7. Functional Fitness. This trend is where you use strength training to improve your balance. Considering this is a major part of our every day life. Bending down, picking things up, walking down stairs, or walking up. Every once in a while you may have to push open a door or two!
  8. Fitness Programs for Older Adults. A lot of people are dedicating their time to creating classes specifically for older people to keep them healthy and active in their daily lives!
  9. Exercise and Weight Loss. Nutrition professionals are now more often than not creating exercises to go with their nutrition programs! Balance is key!
  10. Ahhh! Yoga. There are so many kinds of yoga; you can pick and choose what you would rather do. All of it is good for you. There is includes, and not limited to, Power Yoga, Yogalates, Bikram, Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Kripalu, Anaura, Kundlini, and so many more!! Yoga uses a series of specific body postures for health and relaxation of the body!

If you haven’t tried any of these, I highly suggest that you do! After all – they are some of the biggest workout trends coming to 2016!! Who knows, maybe you will find a new passion and it will ignite a fire inside of you and you will be so happy. Maybe you’ll hate a particular one, but not to worry, there are five others!!

Here’s a New Years Resolution… try something new! You will never know what you might love, or are capable of, if you don’t try it!

Carmel Valley San Diego Community | Amy MewbornOriginally from the Midwest, Amy moved to San Diego in 2001. A graduate of Valparaiso University, Amy had been a Financial Advisor since 1997. When Amy began taking Pilates with her neighbor Wendy, in 2006, she fell in love with the method and benefits of the program and knew she wanted to help others achieve their fitness goals. It was not until Amy took her first barre class that she discovered her true passion for fitness. She loved the challenge and energy of each class. And more importantly, she was excited by the results as her body became more toned than through any other workout routine she had tried in the past. Amy would be one of the best testimonials for Fit in 60 Pilates and Barre. In less than a month’s time, attending 4-5 classes a week, Amy went from a size 10/12 to a size 6. She came home one day and told her husband, Mike that “if every girl knew this, every girl would do it.” Amy is passionate about getting to know her clients and provide modifications and corrections to challenge every client, while making classes as safe as possible. Amy lives in Carlsbad with her husband, Mike, and her dog Emma. She loves what she does, and is thrilled to present the Fit in 60 workout to Carlsbad and Carmel Valley and is eager to help women look and feel great!
